To read this book, you may need to read up some background on Chinese family culture and China’s HIV outbreak through the bloodhead controversy. The author, Yan, accurately conveys life in a poor Chinese village life where filial piety (Chinese: 孝, xiào), financial struggles, and government corruption are revolving elements in the story. Some parts of the book narrate uncomfortable exchanges between characters, harsh yet accurate in Chinese society. The reading pace is quick and book is interesting. Common in most Chinese stories, be prepared for a tragic ending.
