The book can be summarized with its famous quote:

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Interpret as fit.

The Art of War is a book that is hard to understand partially based on the fact that it requires self-reflection. The book speaks primarily on war, as the title would suggest, but speaks deeper on the unchanging facets of human nature. In this sense, it transcends the era of its time and tailors its use to the modern era. However, for one to do this, it requires much thinking on the part of the reader to core aspects of what Sun Tzu is saying and how to apply them in modern life. Thus, this is a book worth reading in short passages at a time and then making broader connections to one’s own life. That’s where the book’s true irrefutable value lies.
